By the time world leaders arrived in Kananaskis for the recent G7 Summit, much of the world was introduced to one of Canada’s best-kept secrets. Television screens were filled with sweeping images of dramatic mountain peaks, emerald valleys, pristine forests, and a luxury mountain retreat nestled in the heart of it all.
For travelers seeking a destination that seamlessly blends wilderness adventure with five-star luxury, Kananaskis Country may very well be Canada’s most compelling mountain escape.
My own introduction to Kananaskis came after watching those breathtaking summit broadcasts. Curious to discover what made this remote corner of Alberta so special, I made the journey to the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, an Autograph Collection property located less than an hour from Calgary and just 45 minutes from Calgary International Airport. What I discovered exceeded every expectation.

Elevating the Mountain Experience
Upon arrival, I was informed that I had been upgraded to the Lodge’s newly launched Black Diamond Club, an elevated hotel-within-a-hotel concept that debuted in 2025 and is rapidly becoming one of the most exclusive luxury offerings in the Canadian Rockies.
Occupying three private floors with 71 newly renovated rooms and suites, the Black Diamond Club represents a new level of personalized mountain hospitality. Guests enjoy access to a dedicated concierge team capable of curating bespoke itineraries ranging from guided hikes and wildlife excursions to championship golf experiences, horseback adventures, and winter sleigh rides.
The experience begins each morning in the private Black Diamond Lounge, where an impressive gourmet breakfast spread features fresh pastries, seasonal berries, artisan juices, premium coffees, and locally inspired specialties. Throughout the day, guests can return for refreshments, afternoon treats, and evening happy-hour offerings that include wine, beer, cocktails, and elevated snacks.
Yet perhaps the greatest luxury isn’t found inside the lounge at all.
It begins the moment you step outside.

A Mountain Playground Without Limits
Unlike many resort destinations where guests spend much of their stay inside the property, Kananaskis invites exploration.
An extensive network of paved pathways and wilderness trails begins virtually at the Lodge’s doorstep, winding through dense forests, along rushing rivers, across alpine meadows, and beneath towering mountain peaks. Hundreds of miles of interconnected trails allow visitors to hike, bike, run, or simply wander at their own pace through some of the most spectacular scenery in North America.
Wildlife encounters are part of everyday life here. During my stay, sightings included elk grazing in open meadows, deer moving quietly through the forest, and even a pair of black bears observed safely from a distance.
The sense of immersion in nature is extraordinary.
Yet every adventure concludes with the comforts of a world-class resort awaiting your return.

Gastronomic Excellence in the Rockies
Under the leadership of Executive Chef Sebastien Roelly, dining at Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge has evolved into a culinary journey that reflects the spirit of the Canadian Rockies.
The Lodge’s collection of dining venues ensures that every meal feels distinct.
For casual lunches and family dinners, Forte Restaurant offers approachable mountain-inspired cuisine in a warm and welcoming setting. Blacktail Bar serves elevated pub fare and handcrafted cocktails, while Woody’s Pub & Patio remains a favorite gathering place for guests seeking local draft beers and spectacular mountain views from its outdoor terrace.

The convenient Market Café provides artisan coffee, gourmet sandwiches, fresh pastries, and grab-and-go selections ideal for guests heading out for a day of exploration.
For a truly memorable dining experience, however, the Cedar Room stands as the Lodge’s culinary centerpiece. Here, guests enjoy premium Alberta beef, expertly prepared steaks, fresh coastal seafood, and daily salmon selections in an elegant mountain-chophouse atmosphere that rivals many urban fine dining establishments.
Every meal serves as a reminder that luxury travel today is as much about authentic regional experiences as it is about indulgence.

Adventure Beyond the Resort
While the Lodge itself offers endless opportunities for relaxation and recreation, some of Kananaskis Country’s most memorable experiences lie just minutes away.
One highlight was an unforgettable ridgeline horseback adventure with Boundary Ranch, located less than ten minutes from the resort. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides, our two-hour trail ride traversed rolling foothills and elevated ridgelines, revealing panoramic mountain vistas and countless photo opportunities along the way.
Equally impressive was our experience with Kananaskis Outfitters. Conveniently located near the Lodge and easily arranged through the concierge team, the outfitter provides an extensive range of guided adventures and equipment rentals.

At nearby Barrier Lake, visitors can choose from canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards to explore some of the most stunning turquoise waters in Alberta. Gliding across the lake beneath soaring mountain peaks offers a perspective of the Rockies few travelers ever experience.
For those visiting during summer, Kananaskis transforms into one of Canada’s premier outdoor playgrounds. Hiking opportunities abound, including access to Highwood Pass—the highest paved mountain pass in Canada—which reopens each June and provides access to some of Alberta’s most spectacular alpine meadows and ridgeline trails.
The region also hosts celebrated events such as the K100 Relay, KanFest Whitewater Festival, and the Kananaskis Half Marathon, attracting athletes and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world.

A Golfer’s Paradise Hidden in the Rockies
Among the destination’s most remarkable surprises are the Kananaskis Country Golf Courses.
Widely regarded as two of the finest public golf experiences in North America, Mount Kidd and Mount Lorette occupy more than 600 acres of pristine mountain landscape. Originally developed through Alberta government funding, the courses have earned international acclaim for both their extraordinary beauty and exceptional value.

Named after the towering limestone peaks that dominate the surrounding landscape, both layouts deliver unforgettable golf framed by dramatic mountain backdrops, crystal-clear streams, and abundant wildlife.
Even non-golfers should make the visit.
The expansive patio at Summit Restaurant and Lounge offers one of the most picturesque dining settings in the Canadian Rockies. Enjoying lunch or an afternoon cocktail while gazing across the valley toward snow-capped peaks is an experience worth traveling for in its own right.

The Ultimate Alpine Wellness Retreat
After days spent hiking, golfing, horseback riding, or paddling through the Rockies, guests naturally gravitate toward what has become one of Kananaskis Mountain Lodge’s defining attractions: the Kananaskis Nordic Spa.
Spanning 50,000 square feet, this adults-only wellness sanctuary has earned a reputation as one of North America’s premier alpine spa experiences.
Centered around a carefully designed hydrotherapy circuit, the spa features multiple outdoor hot pools, cold plunge pools, steam cabins, relaxation areas, and fireside lounges set against breathtaking mountain scenery.

Guests alternate between hot and cold therapies, stimulating circulation and promoting deep relaxation while surrounded by the tranquility of the alpine environment.
Hours can easily pass here.
For those seeking further rejuvenation, an extensive menu of massage and wellness treatments complements the hydrotherapy experience, creating a complete wellness retreat unlike anything found in traditional urban spas.

Fireside Luxury Under the Stars
As evening settles across the valley, another cherished tradition emerges.
As part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, Kananaskis Mountain Lodge embraces its signature “Fireside Moments” experience. Each evening, guests gather around outdoor fire pits beneath a canopy of stars to enjoy complimentary s’mores, conversation, and the simple pleasure of slowing down.
The realization that luxury is not always defined by extravagance, but often by connection—to nature, to loved ones, and to experiences that remain long after the journey ends.

The New Face of Canadian Luxury Travel
Set within 1,544 square miles of protected provincial parkland, Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge represents a rare balance of adventure and sophistication.
Originally built to support the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and completely reimagined through a transformative renovation, the Lodge has evolved into one of Canada’s premier mountain destinations. The addition of the Black Diamond Club further elevates its appeal for discerning travelers seeking personalized service, exclusive amenities, and immersive outdoor experiences.
For private aviation travelers and luxury adventurers alike, Kananaskis offers something increasingly difficult to find in today’s world: authenticity.
Here, luxury does not compete with nature—it enhances it.

Whether arriving for championship golf, alpine wellness, mountain adventures, culinary exploration, or simply the opportunity to disconnect from everyday life, guests leave with a renewed appreciation for both the grandeur of the Canadian Rockies and the power of truly exceptional hospitality.
Kananaskis may have first captured international attention through the lens of a global summit, but its true story is far more personal.
It is a place where wilderness and luxury coexist in perfect harmony.
And once discovered, it is a destination that remains unforgettable.
