Writing Matters

With Exquisite Italian Craftsmanship, Montegrappa Elevates the Art of the Fountain Pen
  • Date September 14, 2026
  • By JR Patterson

Montegrappa pen

There are objects that perform a function, and there are objects whose function is singular. That distinction matters, particularly for objects designed to last a lifetime. Too often, the objects we acquire are interchangeable, expendable, designed to be discarded. When value lies in function alone, disposal is inevitable. A nondescript ballpoint, purchased in a rush at an airport kiosk, performs a function: ink meets paper, thought becomes legible. The bad pen is its own small but persistent misery: skipping, blotting, failing you at precisely the moment when a thought needs capturing. When that failure occurs, in the bin it goes. A good pen, by contrast, like a sturdy suitcase or a pair of rugged boots, is there for the long haul. A pen from Montegrappa Writing Instruments (available at select dealers, including Abel Richard stores in Beverly Hills, Miami, Dubai, Singapore, and, from May 2026, London and New York) belongs in this class: a simple object that becomes an extension of the self through its quality and endurance.

One needs only a single glance at a Montegrappa pen to realize such an object cannot be separated from the artisans that made it. Founded in 1912 in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, Montegrappa belongs to a European tradition that still values the making of things by hand. That it is Italy’s oldest (and continual—even two world wars did not interrupt its practices) manufacturer of fine writing instruments might alone tempt one toward reverence, but age, in luxury, is never sufficient. What matters is not simply survival, but continuity of intention. That doctrine begins in the workshop, with tools and processes of creation not smoothed by mass production. Montegrappa’s artisans spend years refining their skills: hand-turning resin, metal engraving, hand painting artwork on a tubular medium, setting of precious stones. Each component is one part of a sequence of actions performed by individual artisans that may take anywhere from a week to upwards of six months to complete. In a world saturated with things that are infinitely replicable, such integrity of craft can feel almost radical.

Montegrappa CEO Giuseppe Aquila, whose choice of fountain pen alters between the gold-trimmed Extra 1930 and the carbon fiber Automobili Lamborghini 60° with titanium trim, says that “the role of the pen has changed, bringing us closer to the real values of life.” That is to say, as a piece of crafted art, these pens remind us that even the simplest acts—placing ink on paper—are embedded in a network of relations between people and materials, a broader history of making and using. To use such a pen is to enter into this network, accepting in the process that the value of an object lies not only in what it does, but in how it situates us within the world.

A product such as Montegrappa is the result of knowing the aesthetic dimension of an object is not separate from its function; it shapes the experience of use. Any prolific letter writer can tell you that to hold a well-made pen is to naturally alter your gestures: the hand adjusts, the grip refines itself, the movement becomes more deliberate. Thus, the object influences the writer, and demonstrates that the Montegrappa pen is not merely a tool, but a means of expressing the self. Collectors, of course, understand this instinctively. For them, a Montegrappa pen is not merely a possession but a point of entry into a broader world of connoisseurship. There are models inspired by literary figures, by historical moments, by the grand, operatic sweep of Italian architecture. Montegrappa pens do not merely commemorate motifs, they also interpret, with bespoke, tell-us-and-we-will-build-it options (the list of materials is endless and exotic: wood, marble, mammoth ivory, gold, platinum). In this, Montegrappa operates less as a manufacturer and more as a curator of tactile memory.

A Montegrappa pen, given as a gift, perhaps, arrives already freighted with intention: it says that writing matters, that thought deserves a utensil commensurate with its importance. When Aquila suggests that we are entering a “golden era for fountain pens,” he invokes the passage of time, suggesting that to give or to receive such an object is to acknowledge that even in an age of ephemeral, frictionless communication, there remains a place for objects that endure, that insist on friction. “Each time we set pen to paper,” says Aquila, “We are saying that some gestures are worth making beautifully.” In this sense, the Montegrappa pen is not an anachronism, but a proposition: that in the midst of a culture of disappearance, there remain objects that insist on presence, on duration, on the enduring significance of the human hand.

There, of course, lies is its spirit of purpose. A Montegrappa pen is art, but also a thing of action, meant to be carried in a pocket, drawn out in moments of inspiration, and used and cherished in a place far from where it was made. It is a tool, certainly, but also a reminder: that some acts are worth doing with care, are worth keeping. And that the simple gesture of writing, repeated over time, can give shape to a life.
