2016 Grammy Nominations

Today, the Recording Academy announced nominations for the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards, and the list of nominees reflects a diverse group of artists, and a changing contemporary music landscape.

On the strength of his thought-provoking opus, To Pimp a Butterfly, Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar leads all nominees with 11 nominations, followed by pop goddess Taylor Swift and R&B sensation The Weeknd, who each nabbed seven.

Kendrick-Lamar-Taylor-Swift-Weeknd

Music producer/songwriter Max Martin received six nominations and Drake, mastering engineer Tom Coyne, and engineers/mixers Serban Ghenea and John Hanes each earned five nominations. (But suspiciously none for Drake’s ubiquitious viral R&B anthem “Hotline Bling.”)

On the diversity of this year’s nominations, Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy, said: “The diversity in the creative community is what makes music a universal language, and it’s gratifying to see the vibrancy of today’s artistic landscape reflected in this year’s nominations…artists are pushing boundaries in exciting ways, making it an exceptionally strong year for music.”

Lamar has a good shot at becoming the first rapper to win Album of the Year, but he’ll have to overcome Swift (who had the biggest album of the year), The Weekend (who currently owns the zeitgeist), and dark horses who appeal to the Academy’s older voting base, like Alabama Shakes and Chris Stapleton.

The winners will be announced live Feb. 15, 2016 on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.
