Vacation homes begin by being drawn to a certain area: the beach, the mountains, the desert. This area was chosen due to the emotions it evokes in the client and the pleasure the natural surroundings bring them. The home should play to the architectural style and design that is true to the vernacular of the area that is either a fresh and innovative interpretation or a more traditional and historical expression. Using indigenous materials such as native wood species or stone quarried locally has truth for the geographical region. These natural materials have a beneficial effect not only aesthetically, but emotionally, as well. Incorporating local charm can be accomplished by playing to the regional artisan heritage; whether quilt making or woodworking, it can be implemented in an unexpected element.
“Designing for families is a facet of my design practice I especially enjoy. Thinking through the needs and lifestyle requirements of each member allows me to care for the family as a whole,” Lang states. One such example is when she plans multipurpose spaces with impromptu sleeping areas such as alcoves and benches that fold into beds to accommodate large numbers of family members and guests. By incorporating textures and materials such as reclaimed wood and indestructible metals, the character of the space improves with the patina of time and the wear and tear of family life. “Vacations are fun, so it’s important to make it easy and carefree in maintenance and use,” she adds.
In the end, the most wonderful aspect of interior design is its ability to create an emotional response. As Lang states, “Use the power of design to create a spectacular living environment that aspires to the experiences you want you and your family to have.”
