The name ‘Talking Stick’ has cultural significance for the Salt River Indian Community since Pima (Akimel O’odham) and Maricopa (Xalychidom Piipaash) carvers historically recorded events and milestones on calendar sticks, which are also commonly called talking sticks. Just as each icon tells an important story about the Community, the properties within the Talking Stick Destination tell a little about the Community, the state and tourism in Arizona.
The Salt River Community is comprised of two tribes, the Pima and the Maricopa whose tribal land encompasses 52,600 acres adjacent to Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe and Fountain Hills.
